Roofing Process

KFS Cares •  Quality •  Walkthrough •  Process •  Warrantees •  Media Kit

Before we climb up on the roof we check in to make sure that nothing has changed since the walkthrough. Our walkthrough plan accounts for where our equipment will be and what access we will need so if anything has changed, we need to be aware of it before starting to set up. Weather is also a consideration before we start working. Temperature, humidity, rain and wind can all be factors whether we get started, so we use current technology to keep us alerted to the weather.

Depending on what type of roof you have there may be various stages for each type of roof. Our crew is trained to work on roofs including built-up roofs with ballast or gravel, ballasted EPDM roofs, and metal roofs. After a quick walk around with the crew we start working on any project concerns and the safety requirements of the job.

We will have already determined what type of clean-up your roof will need before we get started with the new roof. If we need to have any tear off of materials, removal of rock or ballast, or sweeping and blowing, those get done first. If applicable, the final step in cleaning and prepping is the power wash that gets all the dirt and dust off the roof.

Some roofs require special handling. Grain bins with concrete roofing for example require a power wash and primer application to seal and reinforce concrete particle adhesion and the addition of a spray foam sloping strategy to allow for proper draining.

For some roofs roof repairs and/or slope build up work may be required. (Note that roof repairs are not covered under any warranty.) In the case of totally flat roofs a tapered insulation system or additional layers of spray foam can be installed to create a slope allowing the roof to drain. If applicable, these additional steps will need to be included or added to the project specs. Other roofs may need an application of primer or spray foam adhesive.

The next step is to spray the foam layers and the coatings. As a final step granules may also be added to flat or low-slope roofs to reduce bird pecking if requested by the client and included in the project specs. Our sales people, our project supervisors and the crew work together to make sure that your roof is a project they are all proud of.

Once the roof is done we do a final quality walk-through with the owner and if possible with the facilities manager or maintenance supervisor. We developed this final walkthrough to explain the project and what is needed for upkeep and warranty, and to explain what can invalidate a warranty.

When Kohls Foam Systems does a job we take care of everything for our customers so they don't have to worry about any of the details.
