Project Description: The Young America Pavilion was built in 1900. The Pavilion was home to over a century of events in the predominantly German community, and in need of a serious facelift. In 2004 the city council voted to demolish the building. Citizens of Young America started a group to save the building.
In 2005 the city council found a consultant who specialized in renovating historic buildings by obtaining donations of materials and labor. Kohls Foam Systems, Inc. was contacted by the consultant in January of 2006. The consultant knew that sprayfoam was the best option due to the age of the building and the 2x6 rafters in the ceiling and 2x4 studs on the walls.
SPF was the only way to achieve the desired R-Values without having to reconstruct the walls or ceiling. Kohls Foam Systems, Inc. agreed to do the application of the project. They contacted Jim Anderson of BASF/FE about the project and he agreed to donate the foam. The ceiling space received three inches of foam and the wall space 2.5 inches. There was a large amount of covering that took place before spraying foam. One applicator sprayed the ceilings from scaffolding and the other applicator sprayed the walls. Two other laborers moved tarps (the floor was refinished before starting the ceilings and walls) and scaffolding.
Benefits of Using Foam: Ability to achieve high R-Value with the existing structure of the building.
The project received an award from the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM). This award was "because of the successful resolution despite commmunity passion, inherent controversy within the community and other difficulties involved."
